Italian Wine Country Hosts
Sun, 19 Oct 08 23:45:10 -0700
This is the final post from Italy. Next stop: Provence! My tour of Emilia-Romagna has taken me to more than a dozen wineries where I've encountered many wonderful people, tasted over 100 interesting wines, eaten fabulous meals and visited some of the world's most beautiful villages. Have now chronicled these events over the past couple of weeks, attempting to combine personal experiences with something of a global (rather than purely local) perspective on the wines. In addition to the hosts, w

The I-Don't-Know-Wine Guide to Wine

Go for the Grape Stick to the basics with wine. It's complex...and simple. The first step choosing your perfect wine is, go for the grape. Choose a wine from a single grape...not a blend like, "Classic Red." Instead, read, "Chardonnay," or "Malbec,” single grape varieties. Why? It's easier to understand, better for the palette and usually tastier. Go for the Colour A clear look to the white wine and a rich, red for the darke
The Lady Of The Manor Is Out To Bend The Nation's Mind
Sun, 19 Oct 08 12:08:10 -0700
It could be a scene from a photo shoot for Country Life. A log fire crackles in the baronial hall of Beckley Park, Oxfordshire, a grand Tudor house whose ancient walls are hung with tapestries. Large vases cascade with fresh flowers. Outside, there is not one, but three moats. The lady of the manor, Amanda, Lady Neidpath, is dressed in velvet and tweed, with not a scrap of make-up on her face. Her appearance is arresting, in a shabby-chic manner. Only when she opens her mouth to speak is thi

Experts versus Equations

Are expert predictions more accurate than predictions generated by computer analysis of data? I’ve been reading Ian Ayres’ book Super Crunchers, which looks at this question in a chapter titled “Experts versus Equations”. Examples of experts versus equations are given throughout the book, including a regression equation that can predict the future price of wine better than world-famous wine experts, some nifty number crunching that can more accurately pick successful baseball players than can p
