Make Mine Italian: Wines From Tuscany And Piedmont

A modern renaissance of winemaking in Italy is making wine lovers and critics stand up and take notice. In the 20th century, wine in Italy frequently meant low-cost, low quality and high volume-think straw covered bottles-with little to get excited about. However, things have changed in past 25 years and thanks to new laws further regulating Italian vintners, the standard of winemakers in that country is reaching new levels of excellence.

Today, Italy is seen as one of the most prolific and versatile wine regions in the world-with over 100 official vitis vinifera vines- and thousands of grape varieties. Italian wines are food friendly and affordable, with many of the wines available in specialty retail stores. Italian red varietals offer a nice alternative to California cabernets and merlots. Sangiovese is the grape of Chianti Classico that hails from the hills of Tuscany in Northern Italy, and in the hands of a talented wine maker, this red wine can be absolutely elegant. Look no farther than the cuisine of Italy to find the perfect match for Chianti. Try pasta pomodoro (or any red sauce), pizza and roast lamb with this lovely red.

The great Barolo, made from the Nebbiolo grape grown in Piedmont, is the King of red wines in Italy. And though Barolos are rare and pricey, these big-gun reds are prize cellar candidates, with at least 5 (if not 15) years of patience required before the wines mature to a divine richness. Boutique wine retailer www.personalcellar.com has only a limited supply of the 1999 Cordero di Montemezolo Barolo, priced under ($40). This is a great value from one of the best vintages of the last decade. If pasta and pizza are on your menu this week, try the 2000 Il Mandorlo Chianti Classico ($25) from another great vintage. It is blended with a little cabernet and merlot, to create a lush, mouth-filling wine with just the right acidity to balance tomato sauces- and not break the bank while still impressing your guests.

Preserving the Bottom-Line

Sat, 19 Apr 2008 18:44:05 PDT
There were a couple of articles in Saturday's The Age newspaper alerting the good people of Melbourne that we are in for some petrol style price hikes in the restaurant industry, due mostly to the rising cost of raw ingredients, which, according to Daniella Miletic, have risen well beyond the inflation rate over the past five years. John Lethlean's sobering news is that restaurateurs concerned about menu price increases frightening away customers, are instead turning to their wine lists to add

What a Thing is Worth

"Here's what the publisher of this book does." The speaker was John Van Diest. The setting was the meeting hall of the Louisiana Baptist Convention in Alexandria, where a roomful of authors and would-be-writers had gathered to sop up the creative drippings from the mind of this "Publisher of the Year," so named by his peers in that industry. He was speaking of the first book from the pen of one of our most popular Christian pastor-writers. "He has put out many books since this first one, each

Now I Can Say that I've "Dined", Not Just Eaten

Sun, 20 Apr 2008 04:04:19 PDT
So far, I hadn't exactly been thrilled by the options available at the Orlando World Marriott for vegetarians. That's why I was excited to find out that Bob and I were invited out to another resort for dinner Monday night. (That happens a lot at these conferences....suppliers with meaty (pardon the phrase) expense accounts wine and dine the lesser mortals, the category in which Bob and I fall, fortunately. A cab took us, another couple, and our host (also named Bob) to the Portofino Bay Hotel.

Turn Michigan into a Park?

Sun, 20 Apr 2008 07:24:16 PDT
I'm currently in northern Michigan on business. I still remember the first time I visited the area over ten years ago with my then fiancee and was stunned when it didn't look anything like Detroit. No flak jackets required. The cobalt blue waters of Grand Traverse Bay reminded me of the Virgin Islands and I enjoyed visiting the numerous wineries... although cherry wine still doesn't quite compare to a good west-side Paso Robles red. The winters are a little harsh, but still beautiful. Litt

1 min. with a superhero: Steve Bolnik

This morning, we’re chatting to Steve Bolnik, wildlife hooligan, academic, tourism operator and professional hiker. Steve’s from Zimbabwe, which you’ll notice by the mad glint in his eye, and he specialises in something fairly unique: safaris on foot. While most safari operators wimp out in heavily armored 4×4’s, Steve does a lot of his tours au naturelle. That is to say, he’s not naked, but just happens to like walking in the wild. Steve’s also a purveyor of the famous Walking Tour through Cap
